I format my drives using ghosts, and bad drives are quite the pain in the ass. What drives have been used in mass - and which have failed?

My results:
From about 8 Maxtor 120 gb 7200 - 1 failure
From about 18 Samsung 120 gb 7200 - 3 failures

Well i go through more drives in my TiVo's then my xbox so i'll just post that. My xbox has had a 120GB Seagate in it for over a year, no problems.

On my TiVo's:
From 2 Maxtor 80GB and 2 Maxtor 120GB - 1 failure each (hence i hate maxtor)
From 1 Seagate 120GB - didn't fail
From 3 IBM (each a different size up to 120) - 2 failure now (one within a week one after 18 months)

hmmm guess i don't use as many hdd's i thought.
On a side note if you get a laptop with an ibm drive as well prepare for that to fail. (4 of those in different laptops from dell and sony.)

mine just failed from poor reliability. they didn't last half as long as other that ran for years under more stress. some are just a bad batch i guess. some would die overnight and quick others made a whole lotta noise for a week to give me a warning.

I work in a computer shop, we watch just this thing. This is just from tracking so far this year.

Western Digital BB line (2meg cache): 6% failure rate, ~500 sold
Western Digital JB line (8meg cache): 1.5% failure rate, ~ 600 sold
Maxtor 30gb cheap ass drive: 8% failure rate, ~400 sold
Rest of the maxtors we sell: 4%,~ 150 sold
Samsung drives: <1%,~150 sold
Seagate: only sold like 10, but none have come back
