I successfully modded and installed the Samsung 616t to replace my Thomson drive. The load times seem a little faster but I believe this may be due to the fact that it is reading the media better but don't believe that it is reading it faster. Doesn't the firmware control how fast a drive can read or is this completely a mechanical issue? In other words, does the Samsung 616 still read at 16x after the mod?

No, it reads at the same rotational speed as the original Xbox Samsung drive. It might read slightly quicker due to better optics w/in the drive.

yeah, same way you see a small speed increase with a 7200rpm drive vs a 5400, even though the xbox only utilizes the transfer speed of a 5400

if it was actually running at 16x you would see a HUGE speed increase (4x to 16x) rather than just a small one
