well ill try from what I know LOL feel free to fill blanks in anyone

your stock HD is locked meaning only something with the key can access the data on it. And this key is in the xbox... So when you start up your xbox the bios sends the key to the HD and unlocks it. So it can use it

now when you add a diff HD you add it unlocked works fine with a mod cuss there meant to do that. But when you turn the mod off the bios sends the key to the HD but gets to response because it is unlocked already. So you get the error screen. Now if you lock then a bigger HD will work with no MOD but you wont get the extra space.

Locking doesnt affect using it all with a mod-chip just lets you use it with no-mod chip

but some drives will not lock if the older or what not. And the motherboard somethimes get fussy about locking a HD. Locked my HD yesterday simple couple dos commands and boom your done.

almost pretty sure this is what happens

=)
