its not guaranteed that you will have a samsung drive according to the date in my experience. You'll just have to look or try playing a music disc on a cdr if you dont wanna open it. If you wanna get hold of a samsung drive goto http://www.xboxbreak.../samsungdvd.htm this is someone i know and he is very reliable

i notice that most of xbox made in 2003 have a sammy drive, some made in the early 2003 may not have a sammy drive. i think the really new xbox comes with a shitty phillips drive that wont play DVD-R. the drive must be tweaked for it to play DVD-R.

Most of the ones I have opened with a manufacturing date of sept 2003 onwards have had Thomson or Philips 1 had a Samsung. Thomson seemed to be the commonest. The Philips new ones I have done play DVD-R no problem. Disk types were Arita and Ritek.
The Thomsons contrary to what I have read played anything DVD= or -R

i open up about 30 different xbox made in 2003, and most of them have a sammy drive, except 4, the 4 were made in the beginning of 2003.

What do you mean by laser replacements? Are you talking about the whole laser assembly? Exactly what am I looking for here? Thanks.
