Okay we know the 616t and f are the only ones that will accept the 605b firmware and read original XBOX games.
If you have tried to mod another dvd rom unsuccesfully post it here. There are enough other drives out there if everyone post there results we may find some others that will work.

I tried that Liteon drive that has the same mediatek chipset, but it's a totally different optical header and never reads shit after the flash. The tray phase is on a plug but it was wonky and never worked.

so all you need to do is get the drive to accept the firmware and it will work?
or would there be other shit I would have to do also?
I bought a 616B off of ebay inder the ussumption that it was a 616T.
so I got screwed and am stuck with no dvd drive in my Xbox and a dvd drive I have nothing to do with

any drive can "accept" any firmware.. you can even flash a porn pic to it for all it cares. but unless the chipset and hardware matches completely, it will not function. on most drives, the drive will also be permanently "braindead" with the wrong firmware.
