Hi there,

I have been reading the same thing.

I tried it on my PC last year, but had the cover of the HD for about 3 hours. Needless to say it did work.

The HD spins with power supplied to it. I put it in my PC just for looks laugh.gif .

I have got alot of old HD's lying around, and plus got nothing better to do at the moment.

My school has a clean rooms in the engineering department so I wont get any dust anywhere in my HD. I'm still doing it on an old HD though, just in case. So now my DVD window will have a balanced HD window on the other side biggrin.gif

Hmmm, I'm going to have to say using cling (static) wrap to wrap electrical components is a bad idea.. perhaps an anti-static bag would be a better..

yes, i was thinking of trying this sometime over the summer, the only dust free room i can think of is my pool room though laugh.gif
actually i might just pay someone to do it that has a clean room.

and yes, i would think that if it runs fine right when the mod is done, it should be fine shouldnt it? cuase with a top on it no more dust will get in it then what got in it during the mod, or does it usually take a while for dust to kill a HD?

People who have tried it and failed say it can last from a few minutes to a few weeks typically. Maybe it takes months in some cases but after that long who's to say it didn't fail for another reason?

I've read that hard drives have a small air filter inside. This is because occasional head scrapes will dislodge microscopic fragments from the platters. The air filter will catch those fine particles. I'd guess that the hard drives that don't fail right away probably fail when the filter is saturated with any dust that got inside during the mod. That may take time.

If you do a search on hard drive window, you'll find that we have this discussion at least once a week here. You can find lots of good arguments for and against doing it. I'd say the odds are against it for most people (those with access to real clean rooms are an exception). Even so, if you've got a drive you can afford to lose, go for it! If it doesn't work, maybe the lessons you learn will be worth more than the drive.
