ok i tried to switch from ava to mxm to my primary dashboard. i first read the tutorials and decided that i would let mxm set all the xml files.

first step i did was patch the mxm default.xbe file to load the matrix intro and to disable g drive
i decided to let mxm set the xml file so i didnt make a menu.xml and i used the basic MXM.xml file found in dash_config folder, i left it as is

i loaded up ava, ftped to box, uploaded data, modified bios to load mxmdash.xbe first

and so it loads. i start it up with the default skin, playing around with buttons to see how to config the dash. saw that ftp was setup and i tried to ftp to box using flash fxp. the ip i set to the xbox was 192.168.1.18 which showed up in the dash as static ip.

flash fxp connected and showed me the list of drives but when i try to view the contents of any drive it doesnt let me. says FAILED to all drives.

so i decided to leave that alone for now. i configed it thru the gui to set up folders auto. when i first loaded the dash i saw two dirs which were DASHBOARDS and GAMES

i look at dashboards and saw MXM, AVALAUNCH and XBOX DASH there. i then went back and looked at the games dir
and i saw the games that i had in the hdd, except that prince of persia was listed 3 times. you may ask "did u set it to ignore duplicates"? yes i did.

after i got used to it, i decided to make my own menu.xml and mxm.xml files. search xbox-scene and found a few tutorials for n00bs. i figured some out and this is what i made

MXM.xml file:
CODE
<Config>
<Main>
<SkinsPath>E:\MXMSkins</SkinsPath>
<DiscTitle>Media X Menu</DiscTitle>
<DiscSubtitle>DL Romeo</DiscSubtitle>
<RemoveDuplicates>True</RemoveDuplicates>

<User>
<Name>xbox</Name>
<Password>xbox</Password>

</FTPServer>
</Config>

now i delete the cache_menu.xml and mxm.xml and i replace them with the ones i made. loaded up mxmdash and i went to the games folder and saw my games there, and saw that prince of persia wasnt listed 3 times anymore. so far im happy, except that as soon as i go in the folder the list locks up and i cant do anything. reboot xbox and try again and same thing. i kept rebooting until mxm asked gave me a few options b4 it loaded into the dash and i chose for it to auto config again. nothing froze this time except that prince of persia loaded 3 times again. i was like lets just leave it for now. i fiddled wiht some skins and when i change the skins, i cant seem to load any other dashboard. but when i switch to the stock "simplicity' skin i can load up avalaunch.

anyway so far my experience has been bad. and i wanted to know what am i doing wrong.

as far as your menu locking up when you enter it, tis may be because you have a wmv9 encoded video set as one of your prview videos... Load the videos up in windows media player and then goto file>properties, this will tell you what codec wmv is used, MXM supports only wmv7 or wmv8...

Now when you let it autoconfig your menu, the reason prince of persia showed up 3 times is because the two extra games you can unlock on the game have default.xbe files which makes MXM think they are real seperate games...

when you let mxm autoconfig everything, you do not even need an mxm.xml you can just drop the default.xbe (in your case mxmdash.xbe) into the c: drive( or whatever you have your bios set to boot first, and it will create the mxm.xml and cachemenu.xml for you.....

looking at your network settings
CODE
<Network>
<UseDHCP>False</UseDHCP>
<IP>192.168.1.18</IP>
<DNS1>63.240.76.4</DNS1>
<DefaultGateway>192.168.0.1</DefaultGateway>
<SubnetMask>255.255.255.0</SubnetMask>
</Network>

your IP is 192.168.1.18
and your gateway is 192.168.0.1
your IP should probably be 192.168.0.18 then

anyways other than that your mxm.xml and menu.xml appear to be fine, so try these few suggestions I have pointed out and let us know how it goes...

Sounds like a preview video problem.
One of them must be windows media 9.
I take it when it auto loads the menu there are no preview videos?
If so then you need to convert one of the videos from wm9 to wm8 as mxm doesn't suppor wm9.

the video problem i think is the case, i couldnt find a preview vid for auto modellista and i just downloaded one from the net and put it in. since its alphabetical auto modellista is first on the list and it freezes exactly on that. thanx for the heads up.

one more question tho, what can stop my avalaunch from not launching from the dashboards menu on any skin except the default one that comes with mxm?

I don't get why you would want to restrict an app to a certain skin. That might be doables through a script that checks the skin name, and then launches the dash depending on that. However, ava's entry would still be visible in the menu for all skins.

huh?

maybe i should rephrase the question.

in mxm's default skin, i can load avalaunch from the dashboards menu
now if i change the skin, avalaunch is still listed in the dashboards menu, except that it wont load. it just hangs on the accessing screen.
