samsung 616t and 616f both can be modded to read originals (although they are getting hard to come by)

and its more than just flashing the firmare, you have to solder the eject and status wires (from the yellow cable) and reverse the motor

you can also try a pot tweak on the philips drive, check tutorials

for the most part, there are a few the xbox doesnt like, and unless you keep the stock drive installed (with teh PC drive on top) you wont be able to disable your chip (but the only reason to do that is to play originals on Live and since you cant read them anyway it doesnt matter)

and BTW, 135 for 616t is way too much, you can get a stock xbox 605 for less than that

Hi, total newb here.

I got a totally unmodded Xbox and looking to replace the DVDROM drive. Damn thing has trouble reading discs half the time (cleaned the lens and the discs to no avail).

Is there a drive I can go buy off the street, plug in and go without any crazy mods? Oh yeah..and won't cost much? If I have to go spend $135 on a drive I might as well drop kit the box and buy a new one wink.gif

Thanks- Marc

1. Does the Samsung SDG-605 have 16X speed like the Samsung SD-616T? Answer: NO...

2. Does the Samsung SDG-605 last as long as a Samsung SD-616T? Answer: NO...

3. Does the Samsung SDG-605 fix skips like the Samsung SD-616T does? Answer: NO...

4. Does the Samsung SDG-605 load games faster than the Samsung SD-616T? Answer: NO...

5. Does the Samsung SDG-605 backup up games faster than the Samsung SD-616T? Answer is: NO....

The bottom line is that you get what you pay for. You want cheap you get cheap and you keep buying another Samsung SDG-605 again and again and again... Just let me know when you start getting the DIRTY DISK ERROR and I will sell you one of my Samsung SD-616T and the DIRTY DISK ERROR will become a thing of the past.

Are you going to buy a new Xbox every time you get the DIRTY DISK ERROR? Seems to me that would be quit expensive in the long run. I have a version 1.0 Xbox with a Samsung SD-616T that works flawlessly. Never skips and it loads really fast. The only good thing about the Samsung SD-605 is getting the BIOS right before the drives craps out on you.

Thats the price for an UnModded Samsung SD-616T. If you know where you can get them at that price. I will buy 100 of them right now! Please post a link to this source.

Yeah...I almost took a bat to the damn thing last night....

So what's required to install the Samsung SD-616T? I have no OS tweaks or mod chips..and would like to avoid spending $$ on this right now...

Does the Samsung SDG-605 just plug in and go?

Thanks- Marc

If you buy a Samsung SD-616T drive you will not have to worry about anymore troubles reading discs. It will become a thing of the past. Let me know when you are tired of buying new Xboxs. It just a matter of time be you get that Dirty Disk Error message again.

Yes, it is plug and play. Just like the Old Xbox DVD drive.

Check out my current auction. It is possible to get the drive cheaper. I could go down to $125.00 excluding S/H. You don't have to buy from me I am just trying to same you time and money and a whole a lot of frustation. I have been in your same shoes before. The Samsung SD-616T is a great drive. Just want you to enjoy your games.

Current auction listing: It is selling at $114.00 right now.

I am USA. What about your source?

If I can get the drives cheaper, I would have no problems lowering the price. Actutally I would love to do that. I could sell more drives in the long run. Yes, this is the current price for Black Samsung SD-616T drive. I am serious, if you can provide me with a better source I would welcome it.
