I heard that PAL roms use more detail but they are slower 50hz, while NTSC is 60hz but less quality gfx.

So maybe the best idea is to use PAL roms since it won't slow the Xbox down anyway.

Vertical resolution CAN be better on a PAL system than an NTSC system. It depends if the programmers took advantage of the higher resolution. Some games just have black borders on the top and bottom.

PAL = 720x576
NTSC= 720x480

(Of course most (all?) games do not use that maxmimum *interlaced* resolution, I think the DreamCast was the first to do it, which you cant emulate on an X-box)

It's not a question of which type of rom you use. It's your TV that determines whether PAL will give you a better quality image. If you have a PAL TV which uses scanlines then you'll notice they're alot thicker when in NTSC mode (because NTSC uses 100 lines less) so setting your Xbox to PAL will give you a better picture. But if like me your TV doesn't use scanlines then I find NTSC gives the far clearer picture. And keep in mind that everything will run 17.5% slower in PAL mode.

It can be for 2D games (Snes / Megadrive), backgrounds can have higher resolution bitmaps etc.

Absolutely. If you have an NTSC TV you are not going to benefit from a different ROM, you'll just get problems. Whereas on a PAL TV you can try either.

I dont think that is actually true. It's because NTSC uses Square Pixels and PAL doesnt. Some newer TV's support NTSC playback and automatically scale the pixels.

He's talking about a TV with digital scan rather than analog scan. A lot of new TV's digitise the signal coming in before presenting them. They can then adjust the frame size etc. Interpolate up and down the number of lines etc.

Pal games don't always run 17.5% slower, see wipeout 2097 psx. It's rare but occasionally developers do decent conversions (In wipeout's case it's was made in Liverpool, UK) and although the frame rate is 17.5% slower the game is plays at the same speed as the US version.

That may be true of games for the more recent systems. But I don't know of any PAL-optimized games for any rom-based systems besides the N64.

Games for handheld systems are neither PAL nor NTSC since they don't output to a TV. All handheld games run at the same speed regardless of what country they're from.
