hey i have an old comp
specs:
850mhz celeron
20gb hdd
256mb ram
old tnt2 nivida graphix card
onboard sound etc

i was wondering if i could purchase a radeon 9200 card
and get to work on my comp.

with little difference in performance except in graphics of course.

well if it has a compatible port then u can add the card but u might notice that much of a boost because the rest of the spec of the machine, onboard sound with an 850 celly might cause problems because the sound will add load to the processor, droping frame rates, thats not to say that there will be no increase just not too much

if ur not expecting magical performance then yeah go for it, but maybe u can add a new processor/mobo with the cash instead??

good luck biggrin.gif

Your milage will vary for example some games don't tax the cpu a lot rather they rely on the card to do most of the work, Quake 3 is a good example & probably most xbox games too for that matter.

I would also dig a little deeper & pick up an oem soundblaster for around a tenner as cyber suggested the onboard sound is hurting performance quite a bit too.

you might be limited for choice, depending on your graphics card slot if you have an AGP slot then you can pretty much instal any agp card, but if you are stuck with a PCI slot then your options are limited.

AGP:

Radeon - 9200 or 9600

Geforce - MX440, 5200, 5600

PCI:

MX440

you would probably be advised to upgrade your memory to 512MB, as this will help speed things up
