Has the Xbox been opened before?

You should consider taking this up with your insurance company and/or returning it to MS.

Something along these lines happened to me also - kind of.

lightning hit, everything that was connected via cat5 was fried, three phones, NIC in PC, and Network Adapter on PS2. All items were replaced with only time out of pocket, but this got me to thinking. Now that I have an Xbox on my network, if this scenario were to happen again, could I replace my Xbox ethernet port or would I be crying to my insurance Co trying to convince them to replace a hacked Xbox?

If its static discharge from lightning and you are sure it is don't waste your money on anything. we have problems all the time as we repair lightning damaged stuff for the insurance companies (TV and Video & DVD etc). Most of the time after repairing the power supplies the damage has gone a lot further and the cost of fixing all the extra problems just ain't worth it so it ends up written off.
Still we get 25 for the report

Either do that or take you chances and send it to a shop which has the individual parts to test the Xbox with (a repair service).
