I am in the process of of putting the dvd dongle inside of my LE Halo case. What I am plannning on doing is mounting the PCB in the case (location yet to be determined) and the IR reciever LED behind the front panel. I can either remove the IR reciever LED from the PCB and remount it in the front or use a new IR reciever LED and mount that in the front.

Some questions I have are:

1. Is the LE Halo case translucent enough for the IR reciever LED to pass a signal through?

2. Why does the IR reciever LED have three legs (the IR reciever LEDs I have seen only have two legs)?

3. Can I cut off the lower portion of the PCB if no circuitry is visable?

Not necessarily. You'd need an X-ray machine to know for sure. My guess is cutting is a bad idea. If there's no visible reason for the portion to be there, there's likely one that isn't visible.

I guess that means I wont be cutting the PCB.

you can unsolder the three legged IR receiver component and 'extend' the wires by a few inches
