As some lame-ass-semi-warez-kiddie-groups releasing XBMC CVS compiles and linking here in their nfo´s i wanted to make sure you know what we, The XBMC Team think about them....
Pretty please, visit THIS link befor you do anything else!

I made some Guides for setting up shares and SMB sharing that I have been using with both XBMP and XBMC.
Tell me what you think and the Guides are not final so any ideas or critisism are very welcome.

Im not active in this part of the XBS forums so if this info is already available you can go ahead and flame me wink.gif

Win XP: Mounting your local drives into folders!
In this guide we will be mounting your local Drives in a single folder on your C drive, so you only have to make one "bookmark" in XboxMediaCenter or map/share one drive on another PC.

Win XP: Mapping Network Drives!
If you share alot of drives on your network this guide should be usefull to you, earlier we made a "MySharedDrives" folder (Check this guide to set up SMB Sharing in Win XP) now its time to Map it to a drive letter.

Win XP / Xbox: SMB Sharing! (An Easy and a Secure Way)
SMB Sharing: The easy way! (XP Home)
Which you can you can use if your on a secure network (behind a firewall) and everyone on the network is trusted.
SMB Sharing: The secure way!
AKA the hard way, where we have XBMC logon to the share using a password other users are denied access to your shares.

Xbox: Configuring XBMC for SMB shares!
Now its time to edit the XboxMediaCenter.xml file so you will be able to see the newly shared "folder" in XBMC.

XP Pro: Using Remote Desktop!
This is just a little bonus showing how to use "Remote Desktop" (XP Pro util) to access another PC over your network and control it like you where there in person.

This is a great kickass tutorial.

I'll get DDay(JayDee) to stick this.

I do not see this as a sticky. Can someone add it as a pinned topic in this forum?

It might help out other people if it was at the very top.

And about bloody time - the amount of threads I had to read to get it working on my wireless set-up... wink.gif
Seriously, thank you very much. Samba sharing is an awesome feature of the Xbox and XBMC in particular. Wouldn't be the same without it.

samba share depends on what windows service? I disabled many services of windows so samba wont start.

Read the sticky better, it is in there, in bold text even....

Hi

Having a few problems with SMB. I've got two extra hard drives in my system, which I've made as one in XP. I've made it so I can access these as a folder, which is shared as 'PC'. In XBMC I can see the share. When I access it, I can see the 'test' folder I made under it, but trying to access the test folder, I get the error message 'Access Denied'. I can also see a folder called 'System Volume information' (or something similar, not at home atm) but get the same error message when acccessing it.

My 'PC' is connected to the Xbox via a crossover cable. I haven't set any permissions on the PC share. I can FTP etc to the Xbox ok.

I'm guessing it something simple, but would appreciate any help

Thanks guys

Leon

I think you just answerd your own question, you need to share the folder and I also have heard someone having problems if the drives (set up as folders) havnt been shared

'System Volume information' is just a hidden system folder

I keep getting the same messagem Access Denied. I am trying to simply get into My Documents folder which I have shared. I foullowed the instructions on the tutorials, but can't seem to see the folder here is a copy of my xml =

<name>My Docs@Juan</name>
<path>smb://Home;XBOX:xbox@Juan/My Documents</path>

Home is the domain, Juan is the computer name, XBOX is the user, and xbox is the pass. What am I doing wrong?

THX
