you could cut a small hole in the back and run the cable out that way.. that's how a lot of people have done it.

Trouble is I want to be able to use the Xbox DVD as well for originals.

Can you buy IDE Extensions or splitters?

My thinking is:

IDE from motherboard out the side of the case and plugged into HD
Extension pluged into Xbox DVD coming out of case at back.

When I want to use Xbox DVD I plug the IDE cable from the motherboard into the IDE extension out the back. Then when I want to use the PC DVD I unplug this from the extension and plug it into the PC DVD....

It's certainly possible to switch IDE - there's a tutorial on this site explaining doing this for hard-drives... I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to adapt this for DVD drives.
