Hi all, well im looking to upgrade my gfx card in 2 weeks so im busy taking a look at all the different specs etc, as its been so long since i last bought one. I just wanted some advice on the best one to get. Ill have about 120 to spend and i currently own a geforce 4 4200 ti 64 mb card and want to upgrade to 128 or possibly 256MB. Now i want a card that will comfortably run all the next gen games like Far Cry, Doom3, halflife 2 etc.
Now one possibility is the Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 256MB DDR DVI-I TV-Out Lite Retail Box card that ive seen on www.ebuyer.com for just under 120 and so far am in favour of this, i just wondered what cards are better than this for roughly the same price.

thats a very good card for the price (256b is pretty good), how much is 120 pounds in american dollars?

cuase i would suggest getting a ATI RADEON 9800 pro (128 mb) for cheap, as i got mine for only 150 bucks US on ebay

as far as your motherboard is concerned, you'll most likely need an AGP 8x or 4x slot. check if it has it, and if so, its all good.

yeh its AGP X8 but im still undecided between these 2 cards

Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 256MB DDR DVI-I TV-Out Lite

OR

Sapphire Radeon 9800SE 128MB DDR AGP8x DVI-I TV-Out Lite

Still if anyone can recommend a better card than these for less than 120 id be grateful, i wont to be able to run farcry, HL2 and doom3 with no problems!

Are the above 2 way better than my geforce 4 ti 4200 64mb, as that did run farcry a little but lagged a bit when the action started!

the 9800 cards are in the "high end" category, even though the se is the lower of that category. the 9600 cards are mid-range, and will run almost anything decently well at average resolutions. For the same price and between those 2, go with the 9800 se.

edit: ok i just did the currency conversion, and your 120 pounds (its pounds right? ph34r.gif ) works out to $300 Canadian. For that, you can get an ATI radeon 9800 PRO at our futureshop in the retail box (and its built by ATI, not sapphire). I have no idea where you would find it though.

You don't know what you're talking about. AGP, 2X, 4X, 8X, 1024X, PCI, the connection speed to the motherboard means nothing in terms of performance. No game can send enough data to make a difference, and no video card could process it quickly enough if it did. Don't worry about the AGP slot speed, however, most newer card do support 8X, so lack of 8X support problably suggests it's an older model.

4200 to 9800 comparison

you are looking at about a 62fps (45 compared to 107fps) increase in UT2003 & a 29,000 increase in aquamark ( 15,514 compared to 44,138) tongue.gif

so its just a little increase. laugh.gif

go with the 9800pro - ignore the 9600XT it's midway between the two cards

US and Canada are so cheap, especially when buying computer components.

I was lucky to get the best bargain on a Radeon 9800XT 128M for 161 including shipping.
