Most, if not all BIOS loaders and patchers have been supersided by nkpatcher10. Nkpatcher10's unique security functions and robust features make it perfect for any and all softmods.
Next time YoshiKool should let a mod know about modification issues!

BIOS Loaders/Patchers Compared v0.9d
v0.9: First version.
v0.9a: Added features nkpatcher is missing - Metoo is the only loader to work with M8.
v0.9b: Added that all incompatibilities with games, and xblive's checking.
v0.9c: Changed some incompatibilities with games, and nkpatcher's IGR.
v0.9d: Added details about nkpatcher.

All comments, feedback, and additions are greatly welcomed smile.gif This is my first "tutorial" so don't expect it to be perfect...

Phoenix BIOS Loader - Phoenix Team
The original BIOS loader
Advantages
  • BIOS selection menu
  • Debug text displayed on screen
Disadvantages
  • Slow loading
  • Doesn't work with kernels 5530 and up
  • Doesn't like certain USB devices and AV packs
  • Screen garbles up during BIOS loading
  • Discontinued
PBL-Lite - ldots
A cut down version of Phoenix BIOS Loader - for fast booting
Advantages
  • Very fast booting
  • No problems with USB/AV devices like the original PBL
Disadvantages
  • Doesn't work with kernels 5530 and up
  • Discontinued for now
nkpatcher - rmenhal
A kernel patcher designed to provide an alternative from loading BIOSes on newer kernels
Advantages
  • The fastest boot of all loaders/patchers
  • Works on new kernels!
  • Very easy to configure
  • Easy to change boot XBE
  • No problems with USB/AV devices
  • Feature loaded, with unique security options
  • Designed completely around softmods
Disadvantages
PBL - The Metoo Edition - rmenhal
A PBL remake made to load BIOSes on newer kernels!
    Advantages
    • Fast boot time
    • Works on new kernels!
    • Only loader to work with the new EvoX M8 BFM for v1.6?
    • No problems with USB/AV devices
    Disadvantages
    • Not as many features as some other BIOS loaders?
    Frosted BIOS Loader - Tomilius
A PBL remake meant to include a lot of extra features - frosting! smile.gif
    Advantages
    • LOTS of features - including tray state decision making
    • Debug text CAN bedisplayed on screen
    • Incorporates nkpatcher and PBLMetoo (no evox m8 loading)
    • Works on new kernels!
    • No problems with USB/AV devices?
    Disadvantages
    • Hard to configure some more advanced options - but unnecessary for most users
    NOTE
All of the PBL remakes (besides Metoo?) have incompatibility problems with certain games.
Games identified with a problem so far are listed here - respond with more.
    • Crimson Skies
    • Need for Speed Underground
    • Tony Hawk's Underground
NONE of the loaders/patchers can bypass Xbox Live's kernel checking - so none of them will let you play xbox live with backups.

An advantage of ALL the PBL remakes (not including nkpatcher) is that your boot.cfg is interchangable if you wish to try out different loaders - so there's one less thing to worry about...

Again, any feedback appreciated... I'm pretty sure I left some stuff out smile.gif

    [*]LOTS of features

    [*]Works on new kernels!
[*]No problems with USB/AV devices? (not sure on this)
    [/LIST]Disadvantages

    • Harder to configure than other BIOS loaders

Nice! But false comparison. Frosted BIOS Loader is one of the easiest to configure there is. You don't need anything at all in boot.cfg other than the keys for it to run. There are no problems with USB/AV devices.

EDIT: As far as boot time goes, they're all about the same (other than FBL), unless you count milliseconds or factor in the disablable fades in FBL. Hehe... disablable.

EDIT2: Again, other than the fades, it's not slower.

    * Only slower when your using fades *

I'll edit it to reflect some of the stuff you said there - but I do think the original PBL is slower than the remakes - and nkpatcher is VERY fast - almost instant...

And for FBL - i meant it was hard to configue if you wanted to take advantage of tray state decision making etc.

FBL is hard to configure if your like me - lol - want everything just right! Although half the crap in the configuration file should be left alone unless your developing or something.

I guess you could say PBL-Lite is discontinued - but as I have said previously, I could upgrade for 5530 + kernels if anybody wants it. It's just my understanding that Metoo took/incorporated the features I wanted when I made PBL-Lite. Fast, no USB, no video.
In short I think Metoo sort of is PBL-Lite for all kernel versions.

i think you guys are all freaking nuts when you compare the time it takes for these hacks to kick in......were talking SECONDS here

    ude2/metoo
doesn't need to be any quicker

Perhaps it is only seconds, but I boot up all of my xbox's reguraly, and one of the three is softmodded. Yes, only seconds, but dozens of times a week, hundreds of times a year, adds up to an ALMOST negligible amount of time! Ha, take that! laugh.gif

ripcurl: yeah that is true, but the original PBL is quite slow, it takes like 10 seconds to boot :/ it's nice to just boot and have your dashboard there without having to watch loads of unneeded text...

So basically Bios Loading is going in two directions. A bios loader that has as many features as possible (FBL) and a smaller simpler one (PBL-Lite/Metoo)

Just a quick question can FBL just patch the bios like Nkpatcher if you set it to?

Yes. I believe you can just put these two lines in a boot.cfg and have it work (the xbefile is an example)

    CODE
    ForceXBE True
    XBEFile C:\evoxdash.xbe

In case you are interested, here's my boot.cfg - loads E:\dash\EvolutionX\default.xbe on boot, or default.bin (which then leads to avalaunch) on pressing eject. Also has a nice transition effect during loading...

    CODE
    # RC4/eeprom keys needed to load BIOS
    RC4Key what
    EEPROMKey1_0 you
    EEPROMKey1_1 say

    # Setting variables
    DebugLog default.log
    Romfile default.bin
    XBEFile E:\dash\EvolutionX\default.xbe

    # Tray closed - load XBE, else load BIOS
    CheckTray true
    TrayState 0

    # Make LED orange during loading
    LedSequence oooo
    KeepLED false

    # Fade out Xbox logo slightly - display text over it
    SlightFadeOutStep 3
    SlightFadeOutMax 40

    # Show text - fade - and load BIOS or XBE
    ShowDebug true
    KillOutput 1
