A friends xbox (hehe, ya right you say) took a dive off his TV and gets stuck on the blob when booting..

I suspect the HDD is junk and his xbox is not modded, I need a way to isolate the problem to the HDD or other hardware.

Is there any new cutting edge way to unlock that drive without the original eeprom info?

no, you need the HDD key (from the eeprom) to unlock the drive...simple as that

exactly when does it freeze (in the animation or splash screen)...do you get an error message w/ error code?

Yeah, it freezes on the animation of the blob, error code 21..

21 from what I read is just a problem happened and something told the box to reboot and throw the error code.

Can't even get the error 21 consistently, sometimes it just stays stuck on the frozen blob. I did manage to measure all the power supply outputs and all is good there 3.3, 5, 12.

Any help is appreciated!

usually (not always), error 21 appears when there is a problem with the MS dash's files. try loading a live-enabled game and try to update the dash with it. you could also try hotswapping the drive to your PC but this would require opening the case and voiding your warranty.
