Update (10-18-04)
Found out the problem with the lights turning off was related to the silver screws.
Switched to the black coated screws and problem solved.
There are LED's very close to the screw shafts and I think this is what was causing it to short out.

Update (09-28-04)
Ok I posted some pics of the chip after i coated it in hot glue..
This was too keep anything from shorting out on it while it was in the box. (insulation)
It fits almost perfectly in, however when you tighten down the lid too tight the lights turn off??
I will still have to work out that bug, but for the most part it's done and working..
I think I've lost too much interest in adding the button to switch the patterns so it will stay as is.. I will post some more pics later of the box it's self..

~Steve~

-----------------------------------------------------------------

A real Update (09-09-04)
Well I got the chip to fit completey inside the xbox, and wired it to the system, so now my xbox looks like an xbox (except for the really cool lights)

My attention got turned to adding a port to an xbox controller so that you can connect an origional Ninetndo Controler, YES IT REALLY WORKS.

I will start a new thread later with pictures etc of how it works and how it looks....

Is there really anyone interested in this?
I can only play NES games with a real NES controler.

~Steve~
---------------------------------------------------------------

An Update.. (8-14-04)
There is no update..

Hahah I'm still looking for a place to hide that damn controler chip.
I think i will make a small custom box (black plexi glass) and then mount it to the back..

Been busy the last 2 weeks. Plus I'm hella A.D.D. so my works goes in spurts, work for like 14 hours straight and then not touch it for a month, then work 14 hours straight again.. [8o)

The tutorial??
Well first I have to finish it..
Don't look for it anytime soon... Prolly in the fall or something, or after it's done and I get another spurt.. hahaha

Glad you guys like it...
~Steve~

This is actually my first mod!!!

OK now I have some time to answer questions..
I was sooo tired I just threw up these pics and went to bed..

Are you done with the mod??
Far From it.. I still need to do a LOT of clean up and make it look stock. these are just prelim pics with crap haning out the back... When done it will have a few switches mounted to the box somewhere, and you will not see the micro controller as you do now..

Why?????????
Well I wanted my first mod to be well respected in the community, no offense to anyone but I wanted something other than paint and a few lights. I was bored with most ideas, and wanted to do something completely off the hook, and completely origional. I wanted something no one else had done before, as faw as I knew...
So i did this. Like I said no offense to anyone paintting is just not my thing, but props to those who do amazing painting jobs, I have seen some awesome stuff.

Do you plan to make a tutororial?
Yep, just need more time.

How many LED's is that?
There are 60 LEDs in this project.. Yes really; count them...

What are you using to control the lights?
I'm using a Basic Stamp 2 (BS2) from www.Parallax.com
I will publish the source code for the chip a little later so people who want to do this don't have to know how to program.

How much wire is in there?
It took 10 feet of cat 5 so that's aprox ~80 feet of wire

How long did it take?
Drilling and mounting took about 3 hours.
Wire and soldering for the lid took about 7 hours.
Wire and solder for the brains (microchip) took about 3 hours
Programing and writing code for the microchip took about 1 hour
Total project = about 14 hours over the weekend

Can you change the patterns??
Yes you can reflash the chip with different software in about 5 seconds via the serial port.

Why didn't you use clear LED's?
Clear LED's are usually REALLY bright, and get really anoying really fast, so I opted for frosted so they are not blinding, and looks good from the side views as well.

Do you plan on selling the lids like that??
No way in hell!!! I'm dizzy with solder fumes and see wires in my sleep. I would charge like 600 bucks for all that, and I don't think anyone really wants to pay that, so basiclly nope.. I will help you best I can if you want to try it yourself.

Can you FILL the lid with LED's??
NO, just those few (60) LEDs took 7 hours, I don't even want to think about the entire top filled.. Plus it would take like 5 microproccessors linked to each other to control them all. And I don't want to imagine the programing needed for that..

Any more questions feel free to ask..
I will try and get a better daytime video as well...

Good god that is beautiful. Very nice work. wink.gif

The middle of the Xbox seems a bit "blank" though. Do you plan on doing anything to/with the jewel?

Is that just controlled with a BASIC stamp kit? Regardless, it is really good looking!
