Hey all,

Just purchased a linksys wrt54g router and MS mn-740 adapter.

Got it all hooked up and everything works - 128 bit WEP - etc.

Question is - what speeds should I be seeing with this thing? For testing purposes I moved all the equipment to within 6 feet of each other.

I tested using evox and xbmc - and used Flashfxp to transfer.

I transfered one file - about 67 megs - and here's the results:
Transferred: kosheen-catch.mpg 67.17 MB in 38.03 seconds (1,808.4 KB/s)

That was when using xbmc - evox was a tad bit slower.

This is considerably slower than I thought it would be - the network settings menu show a 54 meg connection - excellent signal strength.

Any ideas? What speeds should I theoritically be seeing here? I'm getting almost 2 meg a sec - when in theory I'm guessing I should be seeing somewhere around the same as a wired connection.

Ideas? Comments?

Next test is going to be running an ethernet cable from my new router to the xbox and see how the speeds are.....

Thanks in advance for any help!

no THATS fast for a wireless connection...Think about it...that fastest wireless is 54 then with a wired u get 100 and most people only get 2-4000 on a wired connection...ur almost at 2000 so NO ITS NOT SLOW!

As a followup:

I just hooked it up via a wired ethernet connection and transferred the same file vie evox:

Transferred 1 file totaling 67.17 MB in 12.24 seconds (5,650.5 KB/s)

I just realized I"m failing to do a bit to byte conversion...

Even after that - I should be seeing at least 4 meg a second....

54Mbps is the max theoretical throughput... INterference (Be it from other wireless networks, microwave ovens, portable phones, etc) decreases (or can anyway) the throughput. Also, so too (And a considerable amount) does WEP encryption. My bet is if you turn that off you'll get damn near what you're supposed to. Also realize that the data packets that you're transferring also usually have some overhead, and so take up some speed too...

Thanks for all the suggestions so far..............I might try disabling WEP whenever the roomies are all gone so I don't mess their shit up.....

Any other suggestions?
