I just opened my Xbox to find that underneath the hard drive, on a lot of the capacitors and resistors, there is a lot of white goop. I don't know what else to describe it as. At first I thought they were leaking, but upon closer inspection it is just gooped on the outside of some of the components. Does anybody know what this stuff is? Is it bad?

FYI, this xbox was bought refurbished and is a v1.0

i know M$ used it on teh psu to keep stuff in place during shipping.... maybe the refurbisher decided they needed more support.... Unless it is different that what i think it is it isn't harmful

I'm thinking it's something to dissipate heat, or keep the heat away from the individual pieces. It just looked weird because it's the first box I have opened, and I haven't seen any pictures with this stuff in the tutorials.

...and on a slightly different note, I knew the d0 was going to be small, but not THAT small!!!

I wouldn't worry about it, it will be on most psu's and is used in a lot of electronic/psu devices. I'm not completely sure of what it is but I've seen a lot of the stuff, I thought it was mainly used to keep the capacitors upright and in possition blink.gif

I am thinking of buying a new xbox, are all xboxs selling now v1.6's?

It's used to keep the components from shifting during shipping and movement, it's perfectly normal and ok.

I think the "keeping them in place" explanation is probably the reason. Looking a little closer on some of the pics on the site, I can see a couple that have it as well.

Thanks for all the input!

ive also heard that the white stuff prevents interference between other components because of the amount of electricity running through it there must be alot of static cuming off it wink.gif

Yep, it's too keep stuff from moving around. You'll notice it's mainly on the large capacitors....that's because you don't want any caps touching each other and exploding.

to elaborate on fire2501's response, it is a cushioning paste used to absorb high frequency interference that may be emitted from the components.
