this is what I understand so far

the Retail XBOX HDD has 2 partitions C: and E:
these 2 should be backed up once u install a modchip and decides to upgrade to a larger drive

retail HDD is also in a locked state and must be unlocked so that u can that a PC can recognize it.

so would it save time if I just unlocked the retail drive and install it on my PC then transfer the files to the upgraded HDD later, instead of first FTP'in everything out?

when I lock the upgraded HDD, only the C: and E: partitions become locked correct?

The retail HD has C:, E:, X:, Y:, and Z:. The only ones you need to backup are C: and E: as they have your system files and gamesaves.

You only need to unlock it if you plan on putting it in your pc, but you won't be able to read the files on it.

Ftp these two partitions to your computer then back to your new hd when it's installed. Your way doesn't save time...you can't do it that way.

You don't unlock partitions in a hd, you unlock the whole hard drive.
