Ive got a shitty v1.6 motherboard I want to swap out with a v1.4, is this possible or do the two boards have diffrent layouts for the mounting holes?

it'll work ...you just have to cut off one of the screw post from the case your putting it in

Make sure that no points on the motherboard short or ground out on the new case too! The case designs are sometimes a little different.

aerofan do the psu's match ?

just wanted to throw that out there incase they dont match connectors.

psu does not match

psu v1.0 is for v1.0-v1.1 xbox
psu v2.0 is for v1.2-v1.5 xbox
psu v3.0 is for v1.6 xbox

they can be cross matched. but its not easy

and dont forget about the HDD problems you will have...
