first off, before you ask...

read the manual ... check
search the forum .. check
read again .......... check
search again ....... check

now, on to the problem..

i've been running xbmc for quite some time and i'm fairly used to how it works.. from day one i've been using smb to stream movies/music from my old pc without so much as a hiccup. normally i just used the default workgroup bookmark to get in and navigated thru various shared folders from there.

recently i've put together a new computer and have started keeping movies/music on it.

now when i try and access the new pc thru the workgroup share, i can see it but i can't get into it. i go into workgroup, then i get "MSHOME" ... i select that and i get "MEDIA_CENTER" (new one) and "THE_DINOSAUR" (old one). if i select the_dinosaur there is no problem whatsoever.. everything functions just like before. if i select media_center however, i get the following error:

QUOTE
Invalid Computer Name

?? what's going on here.. why does one work but not the other? so i do some searching.

apparently since i'm using xp pro on this one, sharing is supposed to be set up differently.. ok, fine. so i follow the tut given to the letter. (from the sticky in this forum) now that that all checks out ok, i again goto xbmc... same problem

next i figure it might be the generic way i'm trying to get into it that's giving me grief.. so i turn to the manual as for how to set up my bookmark. using the info there i make the following bookmark in the .xml :

QUOTE
        <bookmark>
            <name>On the Media PC</name>
            <path>smb://xbmc@192.168.1.20:1400/</path>
        </bookmark>

xbmc was the user account i created (with no password) and the ip is the one i have set to the wireless card in the pc... the :1400 i got from all the other shares shown in the .xml. (should i take that off, like just 'xbmc@192.168.1.20' ?)

ftp the new .xml file and try again... same error.

from this point i have no idea what to do. hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction as i've got quite a few movies on this pc that i'd love to be able to stream upstairs.

HELP!! wacko.gif

oh, and if it helps.. here's my log

sorry if this seems kinda "out of the blue", but what is your worgroup name on the new computer, I noticed that you have XBMC and the old computer set to MSHOME, your new computer may have it's workgroup set to WORKGROUP.

my 2 cents.

also make sure you have client for MS networks and file and printer sharing bound to your local area connection in network connections in the media center PC.

You may also want to turn off simple file sharing on the media center PC and double check your share and NTFS rights for whatever shares you have defined.

There is one other thing you could try, this may or may not work, and you wont find anybody to support you in this situation if you have problems. And this method will depend heavily on weither or not your 2 PC's can/are connecting to each other properly. And most people will think/say this is a backwards way of networking a couple PC's together.

Create a shared folder on MEDIA_CENTER. Give the apropriate NTFS and share permissions.

Then Go to THE_DINOSAUR and create a mapped drive. Point it to the share on MEDIA_CENTER.

Then share your new drive on THE_DINOSAUR. Give the apropriate share permissions. (should match the permissions on the shared folder on MEDIA_CENTER.

If you are actually having problems having the 2 PC's talk to each other, and to make this shares method work. You may want to try installing the NetBEUI protocol on the 2 PC's, then they can speak to each other, with that protocol, and THE_DINOSAUR can speak with the xbox with the TCP/IP protocol. This connection method is very secure because NetBEUI is non-routable, and is a good method of connecting a back-end server to a basic firewalled web server or equivalent.

But this is kinda getting beyond the scope of a basic home network. I degress.

let me know if you get this sorted out.

l8rz.

[EDIT] no NTFS permissions on a shared non-NTFS drive. ie. a shared share has only the inherited NTFS permissions from it's defining share.
