You use the crossover cable if you are connecting from the PC straight into the XBOX..Your PC has to have a NIC (Network Interface Card aka ethernet card 10/100)card..Got one for $10.00 at staples

Im a newbie at this also..one thing that slowed me down was the damn crossover cable..I was using a regular ethernet cable and was not able to connect, they both look similar ..the difference is that the crossover cable has Pin1 connected to Pin3 and Pin2 connected to Pin6...I finally bought one at Staples(Once again) for $12.00..So Newbies make sure it says Crossover on the box when you buy this type of cable

If you are going directly into your XBOX from your PC you need a crossover. If you are using a router, hub, or a switch you only need straight cables.

Hold the ends up together. If they match, its regular RJ-45, if the colors (wires) appear to be in reverse order, then its cross cable...

If you bought a premade cable, it should say crossover on it somewhere.
