I got my hands on an xbox with a broken DVD drive. Unfortunately the guy who gave it to me all ready took apart the drive and didnt do a nice job of it, so i dont think I can even run a disc cleaner on it.

So I am thinking about changing the drive. I went through all the tutorials on XS but I still have a couple questions:

1) without putting in a mod chip or soft mod, is there any way to get a brand X drive to play store bought games?

2) if i do have to get a mod chip, will a $20 aladdin be ok? in my case, if i got a chip i would want some media center app and also play system link games. Not interested in burning games etc. I dont want to spend too much on a chip if i dont have to.

ps- i tried doing a search for answers but wasnt clear on these points..

any xbox OEM drive is plug-n-play w/ any version xbox. no chip needed to swap one out.

you can get a replacement dvd-drive fomr our BST forum pretty easily.
