First you will definetly want an account with one of these Usenet servers:

www.easynews.com <-The best completion and retention

www.giganews.com <-The fastest

www.usenetserver.com <-Unlimited downloads

I like easynews, because at the end of the day completion is the only really important factor. However they only offer 6GB a month in their basic plan. So browse the sites and make a decision. Usenetserver sounds very promising also, and the unlimited downloads really impresses me.

After you get a server, you should get an account here: http://www.binnews.com/
They are by far the best site for indexing and searching through newsgroup files (posts). Their $30.00 for 6 months plan is very reasonable. Free sites like http://www.newzbin.com/ don't even have a half of what binnews has.

Finally get a newsreader so you can actually download stuff; some good ones are: Xnews, Grabit, and Newsbin Pro.

So basically you get what you pay for.

So follow my guide, and you will never have to deal with all the hassle and tards on IRC ever again. beerchug.gif

Can someone explain this process in a little more detail? Ok, so first I need to get a server liek easynews, then I have to pay for something so I can just read what files are out there? Then I have to get a program to download the files? Why doens't someone just offer this all in one?

read this: http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

Also to ensure better file completeness read this: http://www.smr-usene.../newsbin5.shtml

It tells you how Newsbin Pro can download files from multiple servers. (Useful)

Ok, I'm getting this stuff now. Just one last question? Why do i need binnews or a similar subscription? Does it just tell me whats available? Can't I just look and see for myself

A sub to a Usenet indexing site isn't really essential especially if your new to usenet.

Plus if your just getting started use GrabIt and not Xnews.

Xnews isn't really the best for a newbie.

So if you want to just find out how it all works, download GrabIt (it's free) find out the address of your isp's news server. Now if your isp provides a news server, it's likely to be next to useless for downloading binaries but it'll do to get you started.

The reason usenet indexing sites are usefull is because there is so much posted to usenet now that it would be impossible to for any 1 person to get even a decent idea of what is being posted in the many groups. You would spend all day just downloading headers.

Depends on your situation. Some people go for Easynews to make up for their swiss chess ISP news server. Me, who got a OC3 cool.gif and no nttp server to speak of, went for the 14-15 mega bit/sec and unlimited downloads of usernetserver. My meter shows that I've gotten more than 35 gigs off them in like 15 days. laugh.gif

Does anyone know of any web based usenet servers?
I want to use my work's bandwith but the firewall is blocking nntp ports
