Will they load faster?

The Xbox has a 2x (inside) - 5x (outside) speed, and I think the new Xbox 360 DVD-ROM drive is roughly three times faster (8x - 12x ?)

So will the games now load 3x faster, or will the 'emulator' slow things down to the original speed?

Surely some kid can try one out the back of some store they work at?

I assume the shops will be starting to receive their deliveries about now?

plus the emulator profiles need to be downloaded from XBL which probably isn't active yet for 360 consumer accounts.

plus there are a lot more factors other than drive speed that contriubte to loading times.

But doesn't the hard drive come with many of those already? (At least the ones they had at the time of creation)

EDIT: Just read some stuff on xbox.com, they say Halo 1 and Halo 2's emulators are stored on the hard drive, but this is for single player only. If you wanted to play these games on XBL, you'd need to download the full emulator. So I guess they aren't having a lot of games on the HD.

There will be I/O time delay on the data transfer as the old hardware access methods have to be emulated.

I guess some lucky people over in the US will be able to tell us the answer in 8 days anyway :-)

Unfortunately we don't get X360s in Australia until 2007 I think... so my score will be on 0 until then :-(

Edit: I have a mate in London getting me one, and a mate in Toronto with VIP tickets to the Toronto launch party :-)

So hopefully I'll have two of the beasts by Christmas :-)

Obviously I'll then be able to hook up the UK 240V power supply US model X360 :-)

No one else in the southern hemisphere will have that kind of setup!

yeah thats what i heard some time 1st quarter 2006 obviously releasing the console in australia over a year later simply wouldnt be practical as the rest of the world would already have theirs

Well, in general, a system has to be 3x as powerful as the original to run the emulated games. I would imagine only a barely noticeable difference in load times due to the DVD drive. I run games from the HD, and while a little bit faster, it's not like OMG TEH LOLIOZ TISH ISH FAST!

I played some halo 2 on my xbox 360 last night it does load faster. And the graphics do look crisper or more polished.

In theory the dvd is 3 times as fast...

But in real life, its an optimal situation where it is 3 times as fast.

the drive doesnt just boot up at maximum speed..

When copying a dvd to your xbox with a lot of small files, it could take much longer than copying a dvd of the same size consisting of one or more larger files. Then the dvd can really reach its higher transfer speed but the small files are already finished before the drive can reach its maximum speed so the speed for that file is much lower.

I think u have to calculate the acces time to reach a good estimate for the drive speed, and its always an estimate. If its 3 times faster with loading game A ... chances are its not 3 times faster in game B.

i dont think access time of the 360 dvd rom is 3 times as fast as the xbox dvd.... maybe im wrong here i didnt check it ...

By making good use of caching techniques they could boost up the load times a lot, but that doesnt count when running older games over an emulator.

The harddrive will be a lot faster i presume, so i guess when u load something out of the cache it will load very quickly...

with kind regards
