hi!!

i have been a fan and regular reader of stuff on the site and forums for a long time but never signed up to the forum
but here i am now..

anyways... i was reading the tutorials on how to customise my xbox visually..

the first thing i tried is to take off the jewel on the top

first of all i tried heating it from behind with a hairdryer till it almost burnt my hand touching the box, but it didnt even show signs of weakness
did that several times.... still unsucessful

i then even tried putting it in the fridge for 2 hours and still no luck

does anyone know how else i could get it off (without damaging it of course)

but i dont think id be able to leave it in the fridge overnight or anything because my dad would just be like wtf?

so yeah.... does anyone know or can help me

if its of any use, my xbox was made oct 17th 2002

thanks in advance....

put the top case in a freezer for 20-30 mins, then take it out and tap on the back of the jewel area with the back of a screwdriver and it will pop right out smile.gif. Or just lately ive been using dental floss, just work it slowly under the jewel and kind of saw it out using the floss.

uggg, the "floss" method didn't work for me. After about 30 mins and about 5 feet of wasted floss (I tried about 5 different brands if the stuff too), I just grabbed my sisters hair-dryer and just melted the glue, then used a screw driver to "peel" off the jewel. Be carefull as its easy to crack or chip the jewel with a screwdriver.

i also didnt have any luck with the floss. i even tryed 2 pound test. fishing line and it still broke. i just heated it up with my moms hair dryer. P.S. i think that with the different versions of xboxs the jewels as well as the black tape are different, the 1.0's are hard to get off but easy to sand, and the new like 1.6 and stuff are really easy to get off but hard to sand.

USE THE FLOSS!!!! i've tried the hairdryer and freezer method. all the hairdryer did was make the case warm. so i tried a heat gun, and that only deformed the lid (don't do that tongue.gif) i put another lid in the freezer overnight and smacked the crap out of it w/ a damned shoe, and still nothin. what works? i used some regular Colgate Whitening Dental Floss. broke my first piece cause i was pulling too hard too fast. go slow and just scissor it back and forth. it'll work. don't LIFT on it, just slide it latterally and it'll cut the 3M tape behind it. then just clean up the jewel and case. VIOLA!! done...

My favorite method takes about 5 minutes. All you need is some goo gone, and two small jewelers flattip screwdrivers.

soak the whole jewel area in goo gone, and carefully wedge a screwdriver under the jewel and slowly push the screwdriver down, letting the jewel slightly lift so goo gone can reach underneath. Wait a few seconds, and use the other screwdriver and pry another part of the jewel slightly up letting more goo gone go under.

I just do this until the whole thing comes off. It took me about 20 minutes the first time, but now it takes about 5

just to let you all know, i put it in the freezer for 45 minutes

got it out and slapped it with a wooden brush thing, basically like the handle end of a hammer
and it came off instantly without any problem

thanks again.....

He named three different type of grades because it's better to gradually smooth it out. The higher the number, the finer the grain, which means the you'll end up with a smoother top. So you'd do most of your sanding work with the two lower grades, and then finish it off and make it pretty with the the highest grade.

The easiest way by far is to take off the lid, use a hair dryer about 5-8inches away from the jewel and work it all around the jewel, do that till you can easily pry the jewel off. I've done it 100+ times.
