Can I hook up to my friends computer over the internet for transfering files? I'm sure you can somehow,but how? Does anyone do this that could point me in the right direction?

You can use FTP to transfer files over the Internet, of course...as long as one of the two of you has an FTP server. I use an FTP server on my file server so that I can connect to it from anywhere and get my files.

Yeah. One of you need Server software and the other can use regular software. One has to setup the whole server (MF'er to setup, one wrong setting and it won't work) and the other gets it easy (just like connecing to an xbox). You have been around xbins before right? Just google FTP server software and you'll find something, then just search on how to install it/use it.

EDIT: Same as mrogers. I can get on any PC anywhere in the world and access most of my files if I need to. (I wouldn't leave access to all files though) It is all password protected and used with a good firewall allowing only certain IP's can be pretty secure.

yeah make sure you secure it well, ive heard many horror stories of peoples hdd's being used as warez ftp's, where they hide the folders making it hard to notice.

yeah it is a pain to set up, you need to create directories, create write read access to each directory,create user names and passwords, but once its set up, its sweet as hell, just take your time and go through the readme or manual on setting up a secure server and youll love it

and LOL, if you change your password to access your xbox(you dont have to but its safer that you do) and then foward port 21 on your router to your xbox IP, go over to a buddy house type into a browser or use an ftp client ftp://xbox:password@your real ip address you can access you xbox if its turned on

Wow, that would suck. The completely oblivious person would be the one to get charged.

LOL - that happened to me whe i was about 13-14 years old. I went away on vacation for 3 days and accidentally left it on. When i came back my hard drive was completely full with pornos. It took about 3 sec to figure out what happened.

Wouldn't a direct connect with AIM MSN or netmeeting be more secure and easier?

And, damam, why did you have an ftp server at 13-14? Did you back it up? just playing.

just thought of soemthing, lol, you can use a program called Hamachi (google it) to set up a VPN, this will allow your friend access to your windows shared folders just like if you were on the same LAN

My freind had a FTP server that someone tried to fill with Warez, he just started replacing all the files with other ones, so they would download deepthroat_remake_2006.avi (I'm making that up by the way) or somethign and get a Barney episode, it was pretty funny, after a while no one was accessing his drives anymore.

never mind my intentions tongue.gif just assume they were completely honorable rolleyes.gif but i will tell you what they were not and that was to have drive full of porn jester.gif i was so freaked my dad was going to find out and take away my computer that I formated the drive and started from scratch.

good memories. . .

@lordvader129
how are they suppose to get random people to fill there drives with that? jester.gif

another option is freesshd. you can set it up to be a two factor authentication and generate your own keys. you just need an sftp client like winscp. (assuming your using windoze).
