I'm trying to remove the black strip on the HDD's board so I can solder the IDE and power cables on directly. I looked and looked and tried pulling but got nothing. Does anyone know if I can do this without breaking the pins? I won't be surprised if I don't get an answer but I figure it's worth a try.

The black thing routes the pins into nice pretty pins for the IDE cable but I want it so I can solder directly onto the raw pins straight off the board.

I'm considering a mod where I would need the space taken up by the IDE plug. This'll elimate that and give me an additional 1/4" that is much needed.

Thanks - Kevin

You'll have to de-solder all the pins.

Heat up each pin with a soldering iron, then with a pin lift up on each of the little tabs connected to the board. Or use a really sharp razor and cut each one then slide them off with the soldering iron.
