No....it is possible...but only by removing the firmware chip and using a programmer. Thats the only way right now.

yeah, i'd rather not do that, not only do i not know how, but i'm sure it's expensive to do so.

plus i've already bricked 1 dvd drive, and don't want the same thing to happen.

i'll probaby just sit tight until they get it hacked, is there a specific site with updates on progress for something like this?

Wow I didn't know there were Hitachi drives that are not hackable. Knowing my luck that's the drive I am going to get (Nov 3rd). Either that or a Phillips drive. Are those the only non-hackable ones?

Yep....but Philips were only available in Dev consoles....so you won't get one. The new hitatchi's are probably likely though.

Here's what I understand from reading from several places.
Gary and the other folks have discovered that there are possibly at lease two versions of this drive. They are pretty sure that there is "rolling code" in which the keys and other code are located at different addresses on different Xboxes, meaning on-the-fly FWchips will never work(My speculation is that it would take some sort of "smart FW chip" to "self detect" the address locations for on-the-fly patching. Again it's only speculation and more than likely not even possible!).

Anyways, those geniuses are working on a work-around to try and enable read/write which may include rewriting the memdump program. If they get it to work, it would mean flashing via software would work and you wouldn't need to remove the chip.

Even if it doesn't work, you gotta give it up to these guys!

Hello!
May be it is possible to flash every single sector from the 78 firmware over to any other firmware
with FlashsecXX??? Then you could make a Flash.bat to flash all the sectors automatically over to your
DVD-ROM????

Flashing every single sector is not the answer. It would be way too risky and could brick a lot of drives unless one had an external programmer. Currently flashsec doesnt work, as there is no debug mode and the write routines have changed. So, Seventhsons original program will need to be recoded to fit the new drive, if it is possible.

Caster.
