I managed to install Evo X successfully on the retail HD in my Xbox. I then decided to put a 120gig Maxtor inside but cannot for the life of me get it to work.

Firstly I got error code 5 (cannot lock drive) so I have tried low-level formatting of drive and unlocking using the guide on one of these forums.

I've tried everything and am about to tear my hair out. I have tried everythig I can find on these guides/forums but to no avail.

My details are EvoX 1.8.3285
Bios Ex Final 4034

Can someone please help me !!!

Yes - i still get code 5.

I have tried locking and unlocking the drive but to do that you need the HD key and you can't get that until you can get EvoX to boot from the disk. You cannot use the HD key from the retail drive can you? this is what i tried and then i got code 6.

The drive is currently blank (i.e. just ran a low level formatter on it for 5 hours) and unlocked.

Whatever i try to do I get the error code 5 or 6 if i try and lock the drive.

I've been a forum whore for a while, but let me give you my $0.02 cents...

I've received those HDD errors 5 / 6 before... here's what you do...
Consider this a checklist...

1.) Set the time on your XBOX.... if you must, put the original HDD in to do so.
2.) Set the PROPER jumpers on your HDD. You don't know HOW important this is. The upgraded HDD must be in CABLE SELECT mode (Maxtor / Seagate / Western Digital)
3.) You will know you got the HDD set up correctly when you're able to boot off the DVD with your Slayer Disc / Super Disc.
4.) Once you're able to boot off the DVD, prepare the HDD to your liking... patch the drive to you can use the MS Dashboard... Lock the drive...
5.) The most important step.... enjoy!

Thanks for the tips mate but unfortunately made no difference - the clock was already set to the correct time.

Have you used a maxtor and, if so, what pins did you have the jumper on?

1 2 3 4
5 6 7 8

I had mine on 2 & 6 (from above).

Any more ideas anyone?
