All,

Another tutorial - this time for a HDD Activity LED in your main 360 unit via the existing HDD connector smile.gif

This is an expansion of the 'HDD unit' only Activity LED tutorial posted by Allentron a while back - so many thanks for giving me the info about Pin 11 on the SATA smile.gif

Link below - enjoy ...

PS - For those also waiting, I did the AS5 today so will get the cooling temp info updated soon ... biggrin.gif

That's really nice. Also can't wait for the AS 5 data. Did you lap the heat sinks?

Because I just finished mine with AS5 and lapped sinks.

if you connected pin 11 to the NC on the plug (with no resistor) - it would be fine cause that is kinda what happens to it when the LED is set for off during activity. 5v comming both ways, causing 0v movement - thus LED is off.

anyways my plan was to do this but mount my LED in my XSATA.

IMO the resistor is VERY important - it's not required in the shown position for people that do the entire mod (ie break the 5v track) - but what would happen if you then took your modded hard drive and plugged it into a standard xbox ? You'd then get unrestricted 5v supply (coming from Pin 14 on the m/b / hdd connector and now going straight into Pin 11 on the SATA drive) being 'shorted' every time you had HDD activity - that's what Pin 11 does as you say. In my book, that is bad, and liable to either blow the 5v regulator on the mobo or blow some of the SATA circuitry due to excess current - the resistor lowers this current to a safe level for both 'modded and unmodded' scenerios, thus that's what I have designed in my tutorial.

i don't get it! i just did this mod, pin 9 for power, and 11 for ground and leds are all set up parallel with one 22 ohm resistor(which is connected to powerthe wire coming out of pin 9). it blinked twice when the 360 turned on and now the leds won't blick even if i delete a demo or access any harddrive content, or even if i try to turn on the 360 again!! AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG?

Data sheet page 17 HDD SATA connector. Not 100% on which pins to wire but the pin outs are correct. Pull out a multimeter and take some measurements. I never actually tried an internal activity led on mine so please let me know how it turns out.
Sorry I can't be more help, have a spare may play around with this when I get some free time.
