My Xbox is fairly old and I've never connected to Live. I suspect Halo 2 and it's mandatory update.
I've had no luck with the Mechassault gamesaves: Action Replay-->Drop files on XBOX --->Mechassault -->Campaign-->"Install Linux"-->[Screenfreeze]

K: 1.00.4034.01
D: 1.00.5960.01
Mechassault: (written on the disk label) "0802 Part No. X08-82264"

The work-arounds all seem to presume that "Emergency Linux" still works for FTP and telnet.
I just get the same frozen Mechassault screen that I get from "Install Linux".

I'm just using some of the original files. Do some of the packages include newer game explooits that work better?

Since you have dash 5960 I'd recommend grabbing one of Krayzie's NDURE installer packages. Not only do they work with 5960...they're specifically designed for it (ie...that's the only dash version you get full functionality with).

I installed Ndure 1.1.1. I used a different gamesave card and a USB port that I trust better too.
No real problems.

Thanks again,
