Dump and Flash the BenQ VAD6038 drive
Posted by XanTium | August 27 21:03 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Team Modfreakz released a guide explaining how to read and flash an Xbox360 BenQ VAD6038 ODD. The easier 'method1' (no need to remove epoxy) requires cutting two traces on the ODD motherboard and installing a simple switch. This will cut the 3,3V power supply for SPI. The drive should go into recovery mode if none flash present.
MTKflash will not work with this drive, you'll have to use Schtrom's DosFlash v1.0 with dosflash.typ modification required for this drive. You can download it here.
There's no iXtreme firmware for this drive yet, but it's in progress atm together with a new Maximus 360 Firmware Toolbox(info) with support for this drive (no ETA).

Above you can see 'method1', more details and a 2nd method (for advanced users) in the full guide below.

I take it that this method is just like working with an MS-28 & VCC Method (which I know how to do very well)?

yes, it's a lot like the MS28 VCC Method. Will work in similar way.

I wish there would be a more detailed explanation on how to properly cut the traces without destroying them. I have soldered many "normal" modchip installs and such but I didn't have to manipulate the traces so far.

Then again there are probably other tutorials that explain it already...

Anyways this is at an early stage so there might be an easier method in the future. It is nevertheless a great breakthrough and I hope this will soon mean that all drives can be modded to play backups.

Practice makes perfect, plus a good iron helps a lot more than you would think. It's not very hard to find something thats broken but has traces you can practice cutting and soldering. IMO thats some of the easiest soldering because of how little material there is to heat up.

So to prepare a USB bootable stick with this Dosflash all we need to do is dump the 2 files from the DosFlash16 directory into the root (or a directory) of an already Dos bootable USB?

There's no editing anything to make it compatible with our Sata chip sets or anything like that?
