I am replacing a DVD ROM drive that cannot open the tray. My question is, instead of retreaving the key from the original and flashing it to the new, could I simply exchange the circuitry components (circuit boards) of the new drive with those of the old?

actually one of the gears and belts is missing. But thanks, I was planning on trying my proposed method (new drive should be in the mail), but makes me feel better knowing it will work.
