Has anyone seen the news about the iPlayer now offering H264 downloads? They are meant for the iPhone, but with a bit of fiddling, they can be made to download on a PC.

The QuickTime movies can also be downloaded to a computer, using Firefox, if two extra extensions are installed - a User Agent Switcher (to make the iPlayer site believe that the computer is an iPhone), and the Firebug extension, to reveal the URL of the Quicktime movie. The file can then be downloaded, and is playable with VLC. The files are encoded at 480x272 pixels, 48kHz 16 bit stereo mp4 audio at 1536kbps.

To change your browser to appear as an iPhone, add the following to the User Agent settings:

Add a new User Agent and supply the following information (Tools > User Agent Switcher > Options)

* Description: iPhone
* User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en)
* App Name: AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko)
* App Version: Version/3.0
* Platform: Mobile/1A542a Safari/419.3

The Firebug extension shows you the URL of the QuickTime movie - for example, the most recent Mad Men episode is
http://www.bbc.co.uk...tp_mp4/b009364c

None of this solves the geoIP issues, so this info is for UK only...

Does anyone think it would be possible to make a python script to allow these mp4s to be viewed on the xbox? I know the xbox usually can't play mp4s due t lack of CPU power, but these are lower res than normal TV rips, so I was thinking it might be able to handle it?

Just tried an iPlayer mp4 on the xbox. It plays fine from the internal hard disk in xbmc. Tried making a .strm text file with the URL in it, then tried opening it on the xbmc - it refused to play.

check out xbmc.org scripting forums or search google code for xbox iplayer. A script exists which looks great and works great (no streaming yet, download only).

Cheers
