NPD: Hardcore Gamers Spend More on Non-Gaming Entertainment
Posted by XanTium | March 11 23:01 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamedaily.com:

The NPD Group has released new data from its "Entertainment Trends in America" report, which the firm plans to make available to clients later this spring. According to the data based on a sample of more than 10,000 U.S. consumers, while the video game industry saw retail revenue triple in growth in 2007, hardcore gamers (defined as those who played video games daily or several times each week) actually spent most of their entertainment budgets on non-gaming entertainment.

"These consumers remain more likely to buy a DVD or CD, than they are to purchase a new video game. In fact, 58 percent had purchased a new DVD in the past six months, 46 percent bought a CD, and 43 percent purchased a game for a console," NPD stated.

Maybe it's because video games cost sixty freaking dollars? Or that they contain more "entertainment hours" then a movie or a CD?

Not only are movies cheaper, good ones are released on a regular basis. Unfortunately, good games are few and far between. Most games don't warrant a purchase.

If games were the same price as CDs and DVDs i would buy them alot more often. Not to mention the fact that there are about 100 games too coose from and like 10k CDs and who knows how many movies.

This seems to be compairing apples and oranges.

If thats what "hardcore" games do I must be in a zone all my own. I purchase 5 to 6 new games weekly sometimes more. Sure it includes 360, PS3, DS, PSP , PC and WII games. Which is what makes me laugh when they talk attach rates, using their figures I buy enough games for 100 people. But I also have to say I buy just as much music, movies and books.

I think its just down to hardcore gamers mainly stick to only a couple of games and master them. Before I discovered xbox360 I used to game on my PC for average 2-3Hrs a day only playing either counterstrike or day of defeat. Although on the 360 I tend to play alot more different games, but thats only because I'm addicted to gamerpoints (plz help!).

Since when do people who play games several times a week get considered hardcore gamers? My four year old cousin plays video games everday. Not a hardcore gamer.

Wow... people... buy things??

I have a freakin' huge CD collection. I'm much more a music person then a gaming person. Just sounds like "young" people to me. If you buy games/cd/dvds, you buy the others; its pop-culture people

When I learn to drive in the summer and get a car I can tell you all my extra money will be going to petrol, tax and insurance lol.

Ill have to use deals for sure then, I'm will to pay 40-50 for a game like GTA4/Halo 3 if I know it's worth it, but COD4 I'm still not so sure so I end up waiting weeks and get the games for 25 because it's worth it then.

Except for the like 4 months before Christmas 2007. I seriously think all the biggest game developers got together and said "Hey, how 'bout we release like 5 or 6 blockbuster games all at once." laugh.gif

Of course people spend more money on other entertainment
in my opinion simply because you can only listen to a cd so many times before you are sick of it.
You can only watch a movie so many times because of same reason.

these items never change unless you purchase new ones...

unlike a game or gaming experience that can and usually does change every time you play.

And of course as stated already games seem to be the same price even if it sucks.
GREAT or GOOD games do not come out every month or even close in my opinion as a cd or dvd's do.

So the companies like M$, Sony, NIN have to get more to the customer such as online experience or buying those movies or cds from them on the same gaming system.

dude... why are you bragging about being such a nerd?
i highly doubt that you buy 5-6 games weekly. youd probably run out of games to choose from. and probably wasting your moms cash buying shitty games. i think your over exagerating and you cant even prove it without some pictures of course laugh.gif
