look on the bottom of the xbox before you buy it, there is a little rectangle cut out in the box if it was produced before 8-2-2002 then you can chip it, if not then don't buy it, because you will not be able to chip it, well not yet anyway.

I've heard rumors of a new chip in the making that works with v2. Can anyone confirm this?

I think there is every likelihood that there are many groups working on a new MOD chip. Historically it never takes too long to circumvent any new security.

If there is a market....there will be a product.

Good point. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Its not a matter of "If" but "When"

How many hardware revisions / Modchips has the PS2 been through? 6+?

Going off topic here but I thought the problem with the Game Cube was that is uses mini DVDís, plus encryption and all that...

Where do you buy a mini DVD-R?

The last game cube fake suggested that if you could take it apart so that you could put a full sized DVD-R on the spindle you could get around that.

The last hope I read was the Panasonic game cube which does have enough room to house a full size DVD-R was the best shot at it until the hardware is reverse engineered....

I really donít know... probably opened myself up for flames on this...

Mini DVD-r's are out now. Don't know anything about the Gamecube, though. Check it out

Question is, how big is the security on the gamecube? Or did they think the small disk was the best security feature they had?

The small disks already exist for a longuer period, and very shortly after the release of the cube I've read that someone actually modified his DVD writer to be able to write to these disks. Don't know if a straight copy played on the Gamecube. My instincts tell no, but (and this might be totally wrong blink.gif ) i thought he actually got it to work.

Heh, I doubt Nintendo is gonna make the same mistake as Sega did.... "propriety media is all the protection we need!". Did anyone else here follow what happened to the DC? Died, because piraters figured out how to rip games to a CD-R and play 'em from there. No Modchip required.
So, as I said, I doubt Nintendo is gonna rely on simply a unique storage media to prevent piracy. I think they just did it so people can distinguish their system from the other two easily.... as in "This system sucks, it doesn't play my DVD movies! Fuck the 'Gay-Cube'!"
