"We thought we could resolve the system's problems by rationing services or injecting massive amounts of new money into it," says Castonguay. But now he prescribes a radical overhaul: "We are proposing to give a greater role to the private sector so that people can exercise freedom of choice."

Castonguay advocates contracting out services to the private sector, going so far as suggesting that public hospitals rent space during off-hours to entrepreneurial doctors. He supports co-pays for patients who want to see physicians. Castonguay, the man who championed public health insurance in Canada, now urges for the legalization of private health insurance.

Canada isn't the only country facing a government health care crisis. Britain's system, once the postwar inspiration for many Western countries, is similarly plagued. Both countries trail the U.S. in five-year cancer survival rates, transplantation outcomes and other measures.

any Canadians want to weigh in on this? i've been against bringing this system to the us since day one. whats everyone else think?

That is the biggest peace of propaganda trash I've read in awhile and is completely false.

I'm not going to go into every detail about national health care and how this article is complete rubbish, anyone with half a brain already knows the facts or can research true statistics on where the US stands in global heath and morality rates. I'm not wasting my time with this garbage editorial.

A quick note though,

First off Claude Castonguay never started the nationalization of health care in Canada as this article states. Tommy Douglas started the movement in 1946 which propagated across the country.

Claude Castonguay merely wrote a report in the 1960's on recommendation of the health care system which up until that time was overseen by the church in Quebec.

This is so blatantly a scare tactic by your government media to hold back national health at all costs because of the trillion dollar industry the heath care system is there.

It blows me away how people honestly think National health care or socialized systems in general are some evil force of the devil. Yet have no problem to have trillions of your tax dollars go to making bombs and military equipment to kill.

actually i think that the rest of the world has far more to lose by us going to a natioanl health care system. After all the US is the largest funder of medical research (2 trillion), and the rest of the world merely mooches and leaches off of us. So if we go to a nationalized health care system, and you want to continue to see major drug advancements, be prepared to start paying your fair share because simply put many of the drugs today would not be economically viable without the US system.

Medical science is a business. You don't spend decades developing a drug only to give the patent away to us leeches, lol(?).
