How Does The 360 Know If Its Virtical Or Horizontal

what piece of hardware does it use? how can it tell?

Ever move your console around and here something that sounds loose inside your console? That is the part that tells it if it is upright or laying down.

I believe its called a mercury switch(floating ball of mercury), its just 2 contacts and when they have been contacted the console know that its the other way.....if u know what i mean..

very simple, but effective switching mode.

Actually the tilt switch is not mercury its just a ball bearing with contacts. The 360 wouldn't be RoHS compliant had it used a mercury switch for something so trivial.
