im a complete noob when it comes to self repairing a 360. I have a model Benq vad6038 that just stopped working. So i just said to hell with it and ordered and new Benq Vad6038. Can i just swap the boards? and is their a risk to being banned?

assuming that the laser was the problem with the original, yes you can just swap the boards.

Swapping the laser would be much easier as there's a fair bit of desoldering and soldering to swap the boards on the BenQ, it doesn't have connectors for all the wiring like the Hitachi and Samsung drives do.

RDC is right. but if you are good at soldering it will be easier to swap the boards. otherwise here is a guide for swapping the laser assembly (the black thing that moves and has a lens)
http://www.freewebs....aserinstall.htm
you will need to take the laser assembly out of the new drive first.

alternatively you can read the firmware/key off your old drive and re flash the new drive.

if you flash it with the original fw but with the key modified to match your xbox, it will be undetectable. just like stock.
if you flash it with modified fw and play 'backups' there is a chance you could be banned some time in the future
