I've been out of the loop in the last couple years and don't have much time on the comp recently due to work so hoping somebody can answer a couple small questions for me.
I'm going to buy a new arcade bundle and transfer the wireless controller and hard drive over from my current pro model. My current 360 is a very old one, before even xtreme firmware came out let alone ixtreme, back then there was a hitachi drive that came out a few months later that couldn't be flashed, as well as the benQ, and only the samsung drives could run xtreme firmware.
Are there are drive's that still have issues with flashing them or cannot run the latest ixtreme 1.6 firmware? and how do I identify them, preferably at the shop without opening the box?

Since i'm getting a new console i'd like to jump back on xbox live, would transferring my hard drive and profile be a bad idea? I know there's a lot of speculation but realistically would I be better off wiping the drive first and creating a new profile? I don't really care about my gamerscore

Thanks muchly!

any new arcade should have a liteon drive, and a jasper board (best ones IMO)

guides and tools to flash etc. in my sig.

excellent thank you, I had another quick look and it appears the only drive without ix1.6 is the hitachi so I should avoid that?
also how do I know which drive I have? I assume i'll have to turn the 360 on and open the tray? there's a pic floating around of 3 drives but it's really old and doesn't show the lite-on

this came from llama.com

http://www.jcsusa.net/7.html

the lite-on looks like the benq but has yellow wires inside the hole. to see the hole take off your faceplate.

alright bought a new one, it's a jasper with a liteon drive. It's currently sitting in pieces next to my other 360, which is in pieces. Probly should have read up a bit first but it looks like I absolutely NEED a bit of hardware to flash the drive? the one in chorizo1's sig

Is there any way to get around that? I just want to flash it ASAP and not wait 2 weeks for it to arrive here in Australia.

Yes you will need hardware to read the key. You can buy a connectivity kit or make yourself one like here. There's no workaround.

I saw that link, could probly get an electrician (I don't have the connectors and resistors for it anyway) to do it but would cost me ~$30 for something that may not work
Connectivity kit is a bit costly, $80AUD all up, hopefully it gets here soon

Once it's all flashed and working properly i'll jump back on live which I havn't used for at least 2 years. Is there anything I should be aware of? like say when the next ban hammer hits. As far as i'm aware ixtreme 1.6 users are relatively safe at present as long as you don't boot a non stealth game, which it won't anyway unless you use the override disc

You got it all right. You should be pretty safe if you use proper back ups only but we dont know what ms next step will be. I wouldnt buy a probe/spear for the connectivity kit you ordered becouse you can make one yourself really easy. The probe/spear is needed for reading the key off the lite on. You will never have to use it again once you got your back up. After that you will only need a compatible sata connection to update the drive. I have been looking for the thread that explains how to make a probe/spear but i cant find it. I will post the link once i found it.

Might as well keep hold of it, as you might have to upgrade the firmware at any time and that would mean buying another one.

isn't the spear only necessary to read the drive key? after you have the files you can patch with future firmware versions and simply upload via a sata connection and therefore not need the connectivity kit?

yeah thatīs true. you only need for the initial reading. if you keep your dummy.bin then all you have to do to is use your dummy to autoload ixtreme, click erase, turn the drive off then back on, click intro, then click write, then click outro.
