I've been messing with this for a while now and can't seem to figure it out!

I have a pc with ubuntu 8.10
I have a CD with ubuntu 9.04 on it (the cd works fine)
I want to upgrade to 9.04
How would I go about doing this?

You'd think it would be as simple as popping the cd in and hitting upgrade or install somewhere along the line, but every guide/tutorial I've seen leads me to either install 9.04 as a separate partition all by itself next to the existing 8.10 partition or install 9.04 OVER the previous version and in the process, formatting and LOSING ALL DATA.

I have tried going into the update manager and clicking update, but 1st- it would take a long ass time to download because I'm hopping off of a neighbour's wifi and 2nd- I had problems with installing "desktop" or something when I tried that method and 3- I already have a 9.04 disk ready to use.

any ideas?
I'm baffled that this would be hard at all. what am i missing here?

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

is the supported method, I have had some issues with it in the past, I reccomend backing up your data, but that's the command.

Checkout apt-get --help for better explaination.
