If I do a usb hardware mod to my XBOX, can I then use a PC game controller on the XBOX? Specifically, I would like to try using one of the madcatz joysticks that has a spinner built in(For MAME)

Not without the use of a converter device, specifically designed to make your controller of choice work with the console. Otherwise the system doesn't know how to "talk" to it.

ok, can you give me some examples of converters that I could use? I don't believe I have heard of these before.

I'm not aware of any converter for the Madcatz joystick line. You would probably need to attempt the construction of one yourself, though I'm not entirely sure how the spinner would be mapped to any button on the standard controllers.

Long story short, if you're not plugging an X-Box controller into the console, then you have to make it look like an X-Box controller to the console.
