I was wondering if you guys could tell me if the following would work: Set system clock to after the release date, and don't play online until the release date comes.

About the only way I can figure that M$ could catch you is if they use the corrected time and compare it to the game logs and then adjust it. For example, if they need to correct your clock by 3 days, they would change your logs to reflect that. Seems like an awful lot of trouble, then again it's not like that's stopped M$ before.

Any idea on how safe this is?

Well if your pre released game is a retail game disk being played on a non modded console then I would say your chances of getting banned is slim.

However if it is a backup then your console is modded so you will get banned at some point anyway making your question mute.

And if that backup is of a game you dont own since it has not been released then you are a pirate that gets no help here anyway. Pirates live a short life here.
