I put maybe 40 hours on my xbox when it was new, it has sat since. I'm no longer into gaming, but I've been reading (here and out on the web) about soft/hard modding it to be used as a media server.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to:
1. Back up my DVD collection to a hard drive for play.
2. Play my ancient mp3 collection
3. View photos, etc
4. Eventually, I'll be upgrading my cable TV and using the xbox as a homebuilt DVR would be excellent too.
I'm searching and reading through many posts, but if anyone wants to point me in a specific direction, that'd be great.
Thanks in advance.

You can either install a larger HDD in the console, or set up a NAS of some sort and stream everything over your local network.

I can live without the DVR if I can at least backup my existing DVD collection.

Softmodding via a game save exploit takes all of five minutes and you don't even need to open the console. Just plug in a USB drive, copy a hacked save file to the HDD, and load it with one of three certain game discs. The tricky bit is getting the gear to load the save onto the console (and perhaps locating a compatible game), though once you have them...
There's also this method, which carries a slight risk to your hardware but requires next to no special tools.
