i have tried making backups with craxtion and qwix. and burning them with imgburn, dvd decrypter, and others. but when i put the disc in it says 'empty'. even games that work when i ftp it straight to the hard drive dont work on disc backups. any ideas on why this is? also used lightscribe discs if that matters i dont think it would tho

could be that you need to burn slower speed. (4X OR SLOWER) need to use Dvd-r, could also be your dvd drive needs a cleaning, or possibly just does not like the brand of media you are using.

but i dont get why you are doing this when you should just copy dvd to the xbox using the tools available.

by brand of media do you mean the dvd itself or what? and ive tried it at 4x and lower to no avail. i dont have that much space in my hard drive so i want to make backups. plus now i just REALLY wanna know why its not working right for future reference. i know my dvd drive in my xbox is not running 100% (it doesnt read games that are scratched up but my xbox 360 will read them) but it recognizes xbox originals and plays most of them, just not ones that have some decent scratching

if i were you. I would clean the dvd player. How you prefer to do that is your choice, some people like dvd celaning disks , i prefer doing it my self. Butto each theiere own.

and yes Diferent manufacturers use diferent dyes on there dvd's some are more reflective (easier to read) than others.
Verbatim is a good brand name for dvd-r i would try to get the 8x disks not 16x

You need DVD-R because that's what Xbox DVD drives will read - that's why your backups aren't working.

Burn the iso to DVD-R at 4x or slower, using DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0. If it doesn't work then I'd start by cleaning the Xbox DVD drive laser.

i cleaned it and now it recognizes the backups but still gets a lot of dirty disc errors. i have friends that dont use their old xbox anymore so would it mess it up if i just swapped out the dvd drive?

you can swap dvd drives no problem, only hard disks have an issue.
if you have a choice try to get a samsung. and if you have a choice get the earlier version, just try and avoid the toshiba's but even then you can adjust the toshiba's if you feel adventurous
