I have been trying to fix my xbox that has a BENQ VAD6038 drive. The drive has the open tray issue when all put together and will not spin a disc up, also the drive try sticks.

When I leave the bottom shield part off and put the drive in the 360 it reads all discs fine and seem to have no issues. I am thinking about just putting it back together like that and leaving it be, but wondered if anyone else had similar issues?

Also, anyone see any issues with leaving the shielding off on the bottom of the drive?

I'll admit, I've seen it done, and it works. However, you will have the drive's PCB very close and exposed to the GPU heatsink, where something could ground out. Also, the top half won't be securely held to the main body without the bottom unless you run the screws up to the plastic. Will it work, yes. Is it ideal, no. You're better off figuring out why it won't work with the bottom on. Make sure the bottom isn't grounding against the PCB, and make sure the PCB is secure.
