would a drive work in slave as the harddrive won't work in master or cable select as its knackered and only works in slave?

As far as im aware its cable select only and nothing else.

it's master.cable select only means that the drive itself chooses between master and slave.

Should be set to the same jumper position as the original: Cable Select.
If CS gives you any grief myself and others have had success with the Master setting.

master or cable select will work cause both set it to master. I don't think you can get it to run as a slave.

Some drives like cable select, some like master. Generally however, if all drives are not set to cable select, cable select will not function properly, causeing problems.
